  1. What are we learning today? • What are the phases of mitosis and what happens during each phase? • What is the significance of mitosis to asexual reproduction?

  2. Mitosis Cell division

  3. Cell Cycle • Cell division: process by which cells divide to produce new cells. • The two cells are identical to the original cell.(parent cell) • The new cells are called daughter cells Liver Cells

  4. As an organism grows and changes, new cells are being produced as old ones are dying. CellLifespan

  12. Cell Cycle • Cells undergo a period of growth and a period of division. • The majority of the cell’s life is spent in Interphase • During interphase, a cell grows in size, and carries on metabolism

  13. Cell cycle • During interphase, the DNA is in the form of chromatin. • Chromatin is long stringy strands of DNA. • The long strands allow the DNA to be read • The DNA is replicated during interphase (copied)

  14. Mitosis • Mitosis: a period of nuclear cell division. • Two daughter cells are formed each with a complete set of chromosomes.

  15. Chromosomes • Chromosomes: long, tightly coiled strands of DNA • Carry genetic information which is passed from parent to daughter cell

  16. Chromosomes • After being replicated, the chromosome is made of 2 sisterchromatids held together by a centromere.

  17. Prophase • Prophase: first and longest phase of mitosis • Chromatin coils into visible chromosomes • The nuclear envelope disintegrates.

  18. Prophase • Centrioles move to opposite sides of the cell • Spindlefiber forms between them.

  19. Prophase • Name the parts of the cell in prophase • Chromosome • Centriole • Spindle fiber • Nuclear membrane

  20. Metaphase • Metaphase: 2nd phase. • Mitotic spindle is completely formed, connecting the centrioles. • Chromosomes attach to the spindle. • Chromosomes lineup along the middle.

  21. Anaphase • Anaphase: 3rd Phase • The two centromeres of the chromosome split apart • Chromatid pairs separate and are pulled to the opposite sides.

  22. Telophase • Telophase: 4th Phase • Chromatids reach the opposite sides. • Spindle fibers break down. • Nuclear envelope forms • Chromosomes unravel

  23. Cytokinesis • Cytokinesis: separation of cytoplasm after telophase • New cell membrane forms • Two daughter cells formed.

  24. Name the phase. • Metaphase

  25. How do you know? • Metaphase

  26. Does anything else happen during this phase? • Metaphase

  27. Name the phase. • Prophase

  28. How do you know? • Prophase

  29. Does anything else happen during this phase? • Prophase

  30. Name the phase. • Telophase

  31. How do you know? • Telophase

  32. Does anything else happen during this phase? • Telophase

  33. Name the Phase. • Anaphase

  34. How do you know? • Anaphase

  35. Does anything else happen during this phase? • Anaphase

  36. Results of Mitosis • Genetic continuity – two cells which are identical to the parent cell • Cells that are alike can work together to perform a specific task. • CellTissueOrganOrgan system • No matter how complex the system, the cell is the basic unit of life

  37. What order? • How can I remember what order they go in? • PMAT • Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase…

  38. What are we learning today? • What are the phases of mitosis and what happens during each phase? • What is the significance of mitosis to asexual reproduction?
