Special Education Mission Statement: In partnership with integrated communities, Special Education serves students with disabilities by providing targeted services that supplement general education, thereby creating equal access and opportunities to facilitate a seamless transition to a successful community, career and/or college experience.

Goals: More Specifically • Improved Outcomes: • For early childhood, TK and K aged students with disabilities to close the achievement gap by providing access to age-appropriate educational opportunities with non-disabled peers. • For students with disabilities by increasing the number who earn a diploma and/or transition into community as contributing members. • For all students by improving instructional practice through evidence of quality of indicators in every learning environment.

Compliance State Self-Review • Every four years the District is subject to a Compliance State Self Review, enabling us to review our practices and improve educational benefits and outcomes for students. • An average IEP encompasses over 800 points of law. Development, applications and implementation of the laws are constantly being reviewed or changed. This reality requires us to review and update our practice. • These updates ensure: • That parents can meaningfully participate in the process • That meaningful discussions will occur • That clarity in the development and implementation to meet the needs of the students we service.

Common Core State Standards (CCSS) COMMON CORE STATE STANDARDS ARE FOR ALL STUDENTS • CCSS and Special Education… • IDEA -Access to the general curriculum is mandated for students with disabilities • Standards based goals don’t change with student movement from state to state (Very Mobile Population) • CCSS are broad, and offer several methods for demonstrating mastery…examples: • verbal – written – projects – graphing – diagrams - debate – drawing – categorizing – PowerPoint presentation – chart – drama skit • SPED Services must: • Fill in gaps between disability and demands of setting • Ensure same opportunities to achieve

Common Core State Standards (CCSS) Focus Areas • Students need to engage in • Intellectual Struggle- Students are actively and cognitively engaged in learning, demonstrating effort, perseverance and tenacity as they work toward independence • Critical Thinking, Reasoning & Evidence Based- Students develop and apply critical thinking and reasoning grounded in evidence, to develop viable argument and rationale • Collaborative Conversations, Academic Language Expansion- Students expand language through regular use and engagement with academic texts, tasks and dialog. • These focus areas should be incorporated throughout the school day, across curricula, and across the year.

  25. CCSS- Students with M/M Disabilities Assessment: • Full Implementation of the SBAC assessment system • No CST or CMA in Math and ELA. STAR testing still for science (grades 5, 8, 10) • Students in grades three-eight and grade 11 will be assessed Accommodations and Modifications: • Assessment system uses technology that adapts the complexity to the needs of individual students • Assessment items and performance tasks will be associated with a variety of accessibility tools and accommodations that can be delivered to students automatically based on their profile. • Accommodations will be available to students with a documented need noted in an IEP or 504 plan. (These tools include Braille and closed captioning, among others.) • There will be future trainings that will delve into this further…Watch ERO!

  26. CCSS- Students with M/S Disabilities Standards: • Students with moderate/severe disabilities will access these standards by receiving instruction based on alternate achievement standards (a modified version of the CCSS). Assessment: • There will be an Alternate Assessment based on Alternate Achievement Standards (AA-AAS) • Piloted last spring in SDUSD • California will participate in the Phase II pilot test this fall. It is uncertain when this test will become operational. • CAPA will only be given in Science this school year (grades 5, 8, 10). • There will be future trainings that will delve into this further…Watch ERO!

New Woodcock Johnson IV • Newly Released WJ-IV • WJ III norms are no longer current or valid • WJ IV Tests of Achievement and Cognitive Battery are in process of being purchased • WJ IV comprehensive system allows for a precise evaluation of a student’s Pattern of Strengths and Weaknesses across cognitive, linguistic and academic abilities. • On line scoring system instead of Compuscore. • Educational Specialists may receive training on the revised test during October (ERO). • Each school will be responsible for proper disposal of outdated test material. Procedures to follow in October.
