Sometimes we forget about density. We make the assumption that something that is larger must be heavier. Or something that is smaller must be lighter.
But really, density is about weight AND size. More accurately, mass and volume. We will do a lab to determine the density of aluminum, a substance, and also oak wood, which is not a substance, but has fairly consistent density.
Density is defined as mass/volume. In chemistry, we use the units of grams for mass, and cubic centimeters for volume: By knowing the mass and volume, we can determine the density. Also, by knowing either two of these values, we can find the third: density = mass / volume (g/cm3) mass = density * volume (g) volume = mass / density (cm3)
With rectangular solids, we get the volume by measuring the length (l), width (w) and height (h), and multiplying those values together: v = l*w*h h w l With cylindrical solids, we get the volume by measuring the diameter of the base (d) and the height (h), and using the formula: v = π*(d/2)2*h h d
Lab instructions: • Create a spreadsheet with formulas for calculating volume and density:
Lab instructions: • Measure the mass of the sample using the lab balance • Enter the data into the spreadsheet • Measure the length, width and height of the sample using a metric ruler • Enter the data into the spreadsheet • Compare the results with the rest of the group
