  1. Week 1 I was born in Brocton, NY, in 1831. I apprenticed as a cabinetmaker and later worked as a contractor in construction. In 1855, I moved to Chicago and became interested in improving the crude sleeping quarters on trains of that time. During the 1850s, I continued to work on my ideas and came up with an innovative sleeping car, a dining car, and a parlor car for the trains. I guess you could call me, George Pullman, an entrepreneur because in 1867 I organized a company called the Pullman Palace Car Company. Later, the name was changed to the Pullman Company. The headquarters for my company was near Chicago. I decided that my workers needed better housing and began building a new town for my people called Pullman Village. I constructed a theater, a church, a school, a bank, a post office, a hotel, a library, and other shops. This collection of businesses was probably one of the first shopping centers in the United States. My workers were amenable to all of the improvements that I made in their lives. All they had to do was pay rent from the money they earned in my factory, read the books that I picked out for the library, and attend the church that I built. The trouble began when my company started loosing business. I had to pay my workers less money, but of course they were still residing in my houses, so they still had to pay their rent. Many of these ungrateful people were starving. After they went on strike, I had to sell Pullman Village in 1889. I still don’t understand why this happened.

  5. Day 4 – Skim through the reading selection (again) What is the main idea of the story? Predict what might have become of George Pullman and Pullman Village? Why do you think that George Pullman didn’t understand why the people turned against him? Activities for Reading Selection
