Emerging Breast Cancer Mortality Disparity – Appalachian Story • Rates in the TN/VA/KY Appalachian region are also increasing relative to the US rate • Mortality rate for women 50-64 has been trending upward against US rate • Crossed above US rate in early 90s • May be trending downward in most recent data, and improving relative to overall state trends as well • Mortality rate for women 65-79 is just now crossing the US rate line • If trend continues, there will be a noticeable mortality disparity in all three states in 5-10 years • Appalachian region is trending upward even more strongly than state trends
