  4. Composition Notebook setup The first 4 pages of your journal are for the table of contents. Each assignment must have the following, at the top of the page, that matches the assignment entry in the table of contents: date, title of assignment, and page number Date Title of the Assignment Page Number

  5. The purpose of 9th grade MYP English: To establish a community of active learners who work hard and give their best effort everyday. Students will develop better reading, writing, speaking and thinking skills to prepare themselves for a vast array of future opportunities.

  6. In order to be successful, all members of the class need to contribute • As your teacher, Miss Garlock will: • Come to class every day prepared to facilitate • learning • Assist students when they struggle and celebrate them when they succeed • Make the time spent during English class meaningful, valuable, and stimulating

What do students need to do to be successful? • Act with respect toward everyone in the classroom • Be prepared for class every day with appropriate • materials • Work collaboratively with peers and teacher to make • class time as valuable as possible • Work to be curious, motivated, and find the fun in • learning. • Be thoughtful when setting goals and stay focused on those goals throughout the school year

  8. Tardiness, Electronics, & Food • We will follow the school policy for tardiness. After you’ve been tardy 3 times, I will call home, and you will earn detention. After your 6th tardy, you will be referred to the dean. • You may use electronics in class for appropriate purposes (music during writing, dictionary, internet, etc.) with permission. • According to school policy, you may not have food or drink (other than water) in class.

  9. On sharing work We value collaborative efforts and the learning that occurs with shared study. Students will have many opportunities to work together and turn in products that grow from combined strengths, BUT the work in your Response Journal, and elsewhere, must be your own. Any sharing or copying of material in the journal will have consequences. More on plagiarism later-

  10. How do I earn a Grade in this class? Students will be graded on the following: Summative assessments- the BIG stuff (essays, portfolios, exams) Formative work- the PRACTICE for the big stuff • This includes, but is not limited to: • maintaining a composition notebook • participating in individual, partner and small • group written and oral activities • participation in daily class discussions/activities

  11. Major Assessments • All summative assessments will be graded using the Language A Assessment Rubric. All critical assessments will be handed out ahead of time. • Most Formative practice will be graded using formative scales. • Any essay assignments receiving a D or an F may be rewritten to meet an acceptable standard. Students receiving other grades will also have an opportunity to revise. • Assignments not meeting minimum standards for quality and effort will be returned ungraded

  12. What about late Work? Summative Assessments that are not turned in on time will result in the student receiving an “incomplete” in the class. “Incomplete” grades are equal to “no credit” for the class. Students may make arrangements with the me to earn credit. This will result in a deduction of points/percentage depending on how many days/weeks it is late. Students are encouraged to turn work in on time. Priority for teacher feedback is given to those who meet deadlines.

What do grades mean? • A – signifies exemplary work, outstanding effort, a product that goes far beyond expectations, and a mastery of the skills taught and practiced • B – signifies effort beyond the requirements for organization, neatness, thought, and final product, and demonstration of a good understanding of the skills taught and practiced • C – meets the standards and expectations outlined in the assignments, and some understanding of the skills taught and practiced • D or F – requires, in some instances, a revision of the assignment and a conference between student and teacher, and there is little to no mastery of the skills taught and practiced

  14. What do I do when I am absent? • In accordance with Palmer High School and School District 11 guidelines, all major assignments are due on the day assigned. Make sure that your parents/guardians know Palmer’s attendance policy. • In the case of an excused absence- • Check my Sharepoint and ask a reliable classmate • See me for a modified due date. • Major assignment due dates stand regardless of • absences – this means it is due on the due date! • Unexcused absences=no credit…no exceptions!

  15. Response Journals- Comp. Book • You will be completing a variety of daily assignments and homework in your class journal, including vocabulary instruction • Response journals will be collected periodically • Students must have their name and period number clearly printed on the inside cover of the notebook and a table of contents at the beginning of the journal. • Each journal entry must appear in the table of contents and must have a heading or it will not receive a grade.

  17. Are there any supplies I need for the class? • Every student needs the following: • 2 Composition notebooks (1 provided) • Something to read everyday • Pens or pencils • Flash drive to save written work (optional) • Loose leaf paper • 1 double pocket folder • Your mind, your voice and your ears

  18. In addition, each of the following class periods is assigned the following supplemental materials • Period One: 300 lines index cards • Period Four: 1 pack glue sticks • Period Five: multi-colored highlighters • Period Six: markers or colored pencils • Period Seven: tissues • All materials need to be in class with you on Monday, August 26
