What does Sustainability Mean? 1987 United Nations Brundland Commission: "Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs". From the 2007 West Linn Sustainability Strategic Plan: Sustainability means using, developing and protecting resources at a rate and in a manner that enables people to meet their current needs and also ensures that future generation can meet their own needs. A sustainable community of West Linn will balance the needs of individuals and organizations with the resources and benefits of the natural and economic environments to create a livable community for future generations.
