  2. Definition of Consistency • con·sist·en·cy • Noun • 1.Conformity in the application of something, typically that which is necessary for the sake of logic, accuracy, or fairness. • 2.The achievement of a level of performance that does not vary greatly in quality over time.

  3. How You Can Contribute To Consistency 1.Take what you learn at our meetings and apply them to your games. 2. Know the rules! Study the rule book on a regular basis. 3. Know the proper mechanics and signals. 4. Do a pre-game conference before each game. 5. Pre-game duties and conference with coaches and captains should be the same for every game. 6. Follow through on the points of emphasis. For example-High hits. 7. Don't take short cuts.

  4. Handling Coaches • Be respectful at all times. • "Neither Seek Nor Avoid"-What one says-or doesn't say can often be the difference between a smooth flowing game and a game in which the end result is a postgame trip to the laptop to fill out an ejection report. • Top officials use technicals or ejections as a last resort while others use them as a weapon. • Don't go into pregame and make a promise. If you tell them your going to call handchecking and you don't call the first one, you're setting yourself up for failure. Let the game develop and see what happens. • Give coaches your ear. Let them know you have heard them. • If you respond, keep it short and to the point. Do not get into discussions. The more you speak, the greater the danger of being trapped. • Use the tools the rule book gives us to manage coaches: • Take the ball away • Conduct foul-man down for 30 seconds • Unsportsmanlike conduct 1-3 minute non-releasable • Ejection

  5. Exit Responsibilities • At the conclusion of your game; • Stand at mid-field and observe the teams returning to their benches. • Once this has occurred, leave the field as a crew.

  6. Procedures For Handling Fights • Official(s) Nearest the Incident • Clear other players from the incident • Attempt to break up the fight by giving verbal commands an blowing whistle repeatedly • Verbally warn other players not to get involved even as "peacemakers" • Tries to remember color and number of all players involved and the sequence of involvement • Officials may attempt to physically separate players involved

  7. Procedures For Handling Fights • Official Farthest From the Incident (Bench) • Direct Coaches to keep their players and fans off the field. FREEZE THE BENCH _ Record the numbers of any players entering the field from the bench area and mentally note which coaches enter the field.

  8. Procedures For Handling Fights • After the incident • Send all players to the bench • Direct coaches to get players together and get them under control • Do not resume the game until you have; • Meet to determine fouls and sequence while observing the field and players • Meet with scorer before announcing penalties and define who will be on the filed for the restart • Announce penalties

  9. Procedures For Handling Fights • Communicate expectations about behavior to both benches and players in the penalty area. Warn that the game is in danger of being terminated • Terminate the game if you believe absolute control cannot be regained

  10. Procedures For Handling Fights • After the Game • Prepare a detailed written report • Call your assignor to review the incident • Limit your remarks to facts at hand and what you saw
