  1. West Midlands Healthcare Libraries Para- Professionals Network

  2. What is the West Midlands Healthcare Libraries Para-Professionals Network? • It is a network to enable Para-Professionals from healthcare libraries across the West Midlands to contact, discuss, ask advice of, share their experiences with their peers and find information relevant to their work. • The network is part of WISH and is supported by the WM Library Services Development Unit. • Our champion in the region is Clare Edwards who is the Education and Training Lead/BBC strategy co-ordinator and is currently joint head of the WM LSDU. • Para-P network, events and resources are facilitated by the organising group who are all Para-Professional volunteers.

  3. Advert!!! We need more volunteers for the organising group from the following areas: • Shropshire • Staffordshire • Warwickshire • Coventry • PCT library / information service • Academic health library / information service • Any other health library / information service

  4. What resources are available? • There is the WISH website at http://www.wish-uk.org/ which has info and links to relevant resources as well as contact info of health libraries in the region.

  5. What resources are available? • lis-wmnet@jiscmail.ac.uk is the general email discussion list for all health library staff in the WM region. • Contact april.coombe@wmdeanery.org to join it.

  6. What resources are available? • The WISH Knowledge Workers wiki at http://wish.wikispaces.com/ which is an interactive site for info and resources that anyone can contribute to.

  7. What resources are available? • Those of you who deal with ILL’s will already be familiar with the WISH Knowledge Workers wiki ILL availability page. • This is an invaluable resource which has saved someone the job of having to collate the information from all the individual emails and then having to send it out monthly on lis-wmnet. • It now means that each library is responsible for keeping their individual entry up to date.

  8. What resources are available? • Most of you will be familiar with these resources. • If you are not familiar with any of these resources then ask me or one of the organising group members about them at the Q & A session at the end of this day.

  9. Resources for Para-Professionals • The 2 resources that we are going to be looking at in detail this morning are the West Midlands Healthcare Libraries Para-Professionals Network resources. • lis-wmpara@jiscmail.ac.uk which is our e-mail discussion list. • The Para-Professionals pages on the WISH Knowledge Workers wiki which can be found at http://wish.wikispaces.com/Para+Professionals+home+page

  10. Introducing lis-mwpara@jiscmail.ac.uk • This list replaces an old library assistants list that was called lis-wmlag (the old list had fallen out of use was no longer widely know about). • The new list was set up as a direct result of the discussions and feedback that you all gave at the LA Confidential day. • It is an email discussion list for Para-Professional library and information service staff in the region. • Only Para-Professional staff can join the list.

  11. lis-mwpara@jiscmail.ac.uk • You asked for it so we made it happen. • The list was launched 13th July 2007. • The email address is lis-wmpara@jiscmail.ac.uk • There are currently 29 Para-Professional staff subscribed to the list. • If you haven’t already joined then join today all I need is your email address. • Archives of the emails so far can be viewed at: http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/lists/LIS-MPARA.html

  12. lis-mwpara@jiscmail.ac.uk • I am the list administrator so no one can register without my permission. This ensures that only Para-Professionals can join it. • The list also has an editorial group who are also members of other discussion lists and they forward any relevant emails to lis-wmpara. • Non members (e.g. Librarians) can ask a member of the editorial group if they would post a message to this list on their behalf. • It is up to the editorial group to decide if they will post the request or not depending upon its relevancy to members of the list.

  13. What lis-wmpara is for? The list provides and safe place away from ‘scary librarian eyes’ where WMHLN Para-Professional staff can: Post questions and ask advice from your peers. Give/receive support amongst your peers (especially for lone workers). Share ideas and best practice. Discuss CPD issues. Discuss the changing roles of Para-Professionals. Share what is going on locally (and nationally). Be sure that your opinion will be respected.

  14. What lis-wmpara is NOT for: • Duplicating other systems – e.g. don’t ask for ILL requests on it. • Illegal requests – e.g. don’t ask others for personal details of users. • Personal discussions. • Being rude about anyone.

  15. Where next for lis-wmpara? It is a resource that you asked for so please: • Tell us what you think about it in the group session. • Join the list. • Use the list. • There are no ‘scary all knowing librarians’ to read your emails. • Send an email to the list asking a question, forward any info that you think others would be interested in, or start a discussion. • Reply to someone else’s email. • Go on – BE BRAVE!

  16. Para-Professionals wiki pages • These pages where set up as a direct result of the discussions and feedback that you all gave at the LA Confidential day. • The pages were launched 13th July 2007. • The web address for the home page is: http://wish.wikispaces.com/Para+Professionals+home+page • At the moment there are 12 pages that make up the Para-Professionals section of the WISH Knowledge Workers wiki.

  17. Why a wiki instead of a website? • We are utilising web 2.0 technology as it is easier to create and edit pages on a wiki than it is on a website. • No special technical knowledge is required in order to create and edit wiki pages. • Wiki’s allow everyone to contribute to the resource. • The WISH Knowledge Workers Wiki had already been created as was easier to add to than the WISH website.

  18. How do I get to it? • You can select Para Professional Homepage from the navigation section of the WISH Knowledge Workers wiki home page at http://wish.wikispaces.com/

  19. How do I get to it? • Or you can go directly to it at http://wish.wikispaces.com/Para+Professionals+home+page

  20. What do I do now? • Once you have got onto the Para Professionals Homepage it would be worth saving it to either your: • Web browser Bookmarks/Favourites • Social book marking site • so that you can find it again easily.

  21. Let’s have a look at the pages • Only the Para Professionals Homepage is listed in the Navigation section of the wiki. • This is so that we don’t fill up the navigation section with each individual Para-Professionals page. • Therefore the Para Professional Homepage is mainly a contents page. • So just follow the links to, explore, create, edit …

  22. Where next for the Para-P wiki pages? It is a resource that you asked for so please: • Tell us what you think about it in the group session. • Use the pages. • You don’t need to join the site to view the pages. • Register with Wikispaces and: • Join the Wish Knowledge Workers wiki • Amend the entry for your library • Add in links to your email address • Create a page about yourself • Edit / create pages of info and resources • Go on – BE BRAVE!
