Definitions • Censorship: the action of suppressing or deleting objectionable material • Ignorance: the absence of knowledge and/or education; unawareness • 451 degrees Fahrenheit: Temperature at which paper catches fire and burns • Kerosene: a flammable oil (used in the novel) • “Seashells”: radio ear plugs (worn in the novel) • Parlor: a sitting room; site for the television

  3. Cast of Characters • Guy Montag: The protagonist of the novel. He is a fireman in his early 30’s. He enjoys his work. • Mildred Montag: Guy’s wife; in her early 30’s. She is a senseless woman who suppresses feelings she can’t even identify and is childish.

  4. Clarisse McClellan: a 17-year old girl who is Montag’s neighbor. She is an outcast of society because she is a free thinker. She is the one who gets Montag thinking about the problems with his job and life. • Captain Beatty: The novel’s antagonist. He is the fire chief and is extremely well read, yet hates books and their readers; very perceptive.

  5. Professor Faber: a retired English professor. He meets Montag one year before the book begins. He is a believer in books but is cowardly in attempting to preserve them. • Stoneman and Black: two firemen that work with Montag. • Granger: the leader of the book people; he is an author. He believes in preserving literature.
