  1. The key to this assignment is that you use the entire time, keep writing, keep improving the paper until you are out of time. For your EAP essay, I suggest you use parallel structure either at the beginning of the essay or in the end.

  2. Parallel Structure A writing suggestion:After writing an opening paragraph, Rewrite it using parallel structure. It uses a technique that is not difficult to master, and it impressive to teachers and evaluators of writing.

  3. Original Student Work • The following is the opening paragraph of an EAP essay entitled Too Much Pressure Look at the opening and consider how it might be improved. Consider the use of Parallelism or parallel structure

  4. Students will compromise right and wrong in order to succeed. The main cause is pressure. Pressure is applied by teachers, parents, peers, the workforce and competition. Teachers and parents almost co-exist to create as much pressure as they possibly can.

  5. Look for something to tie the parallel structure onto In the passage just read, what can be tied into? What verbiage exists that could used to build a parallel structure? Lets look at the passage again.

  8. Try this …. Students too often compromise the great truth of right and wrong in order to succeed. But compromise itself is the cause is of pressure felt by students. Compromises demanded by teachers, parents, peers, the workforce and competition. It seems that teachers and parents reason for existence is to apply as much pressure as possible on the child, the student. What choice does the student have? Compromise! ….

  9. Student sampleOut of greatness comes power. The power to speak one’s mind, yet hold the faith of other. The power to judge and had those opinions respected. The power to have one’s thoughts uninfluenced by the outside world. Greatness is achieved through independence and not about understanding, it is about rising above conformity and moves to originality.
