Athletics take a huge part in the lives of Americans today. • It can make or break someone’s day and even their bank account if they are not smart. • Often something that is not talked about as often is the athletes pay. • There are people who say that athletes are paid for what they are worth. • Then there are people who say that athletes are to over paid. The MLB is one of the largest markets in the world. • The average athlete in the major leagues makes 3 million dollars. • The minimum being 480,000 dollars. • The max being about 29,000,000 dollars a year. (275,000,000 dollars for 10 years.) • The team with the largest payroll is New York Yankees with 228,995,945. • The lowest being the Houston Astros at 24,328,538. The MLB (Major League Baseball)

  4. People will say that this gives the New York Yankees an unfair advantage over all other teams in the MLB.

The highest paid player in the NFL is quarter back Aaron Rodgers for the Green Bay Packers at 22,000,000 dollars. • The average salary for a player is around 2,000,000 dollars. • Now the gap is not as large as in baseball but the NFL has somewhat of a salary cap already. • The NFL’s hard salary cap is set at 123,000,000 dollars for the 2013 season. The NBA already having a salary cap is not as hard as the NFL but is a lot lower. • The salary cap for the NBA is set at 58,679,000 dollars while being a lot of money is nowhere near the NFL or the New York Yankees. • The highest paid athlete in the NBA is Kobe Bryant with the Los Angeles Lakers at 30,453,805 dollars. This is where most people will say that there needs to be a salary cap for every team so that competition will be more equal. • This is not always the case with though and quite frankly it will make competition almost cease. • It will make athletes lose their competitive edge because if everyone gets paid the same no one wants to work harder than the guy next to him. • Others who oppose the salary cap say that this will not only hinder an athlete’s ability to play but will only make the owners of these teams richer.
