  2. THE PROBLEM COMPANIES x SAFETY AND HEALTH WORK (SHW)

  3. THE PROBLEM • Safety and Health at Work in Europe, in particular in Portugal, show: • low “share of employees with higher education” • low “share of firms that train their employees”. Hugo Hollanders and Anthony Arundel (2005) “European Sector Innovation Scoreboards” • Absenteeism from work costs European workers approximately one million Euros per year; • SME’s are particularly exposed with 82% of the total number of accidents at work, and 90% of the total number of fatal accidents; • 28% of European workers suffer from health problems caused, or aggravated, by their current job; • 35% of workers confirm that their work is a risk to their health. In this context, the main problem that arises in the field of Safety and Health at Work (SHW) is the lack of employers’ and employees’ skills for the implementation of SHW.
