  2. legendary Someone legendary is especially famous for something he or she did a long time ago. Eugenie Clark is legendary for swimming with sharks to study them.

  3. gaped If you gaped at something, you stared open-mouthed in surprise. As the parade passed by, the crowd gaped at the gigantic balloon characters.

  4. snickering Snickering at someone is like laughing quietly at them because they did something silly. We heard Miguel snickering when Rendrick poured juice instead of syrup on his pancakes by mistake.

  5. stunned When someone is stunned by something amazing, he or she is shocked and sometimes even speechless. The announcement that she had been given the lead part in the play stunned Jean.

  6. muttered If you muttered, you said something very quietly because you did not want to be heard. Jimar muttered about her disappointment in her team’s loss.

  7. flinched If a person flinched, he or she quickly moved away from something dangerous or painful. Aneko flinched as the doctor injected the flu vaccine into her arm.

  8. glared If you glared at someone, you stared at them in an angry way. Ramon glared at Francisco after Francisco laughed at him for slipping in the mud.

  9. fluke A fluke is something unusual that happens by accident. It was just a fluke that Dad found my ring when he was mowing the lawn.
