  1. Owens Lake Dust Mitigation Program (OLDMP) Construction ActivitiesJanuary 2000 to July 2005 Seth Asare/CH2M HILL Dane Williams/CH2M HILL Maarten Schreuder/Air Sciences Inc

  2. Objective Determine whether or not construction activities impacted sand flux

  3. Approach • construction activities • sand motion • meteorological data Create animation of the Owens lakebed to reveal patterns and relationships between:

  4. Construction Activities Duration NSS Zones 1 and 2 - Nov 2000 to Nov 2001 SSS Phase I – Nov 2001 to Jun 2002 SSS Phase II – Sep 2002 to Apr 2003 Phase III – Sep 2003 to Sep 2004 Phase IV – Nov 2004 to July 2005 Reconnaissance Activities – Jan 2000 to Jul 2005

  5. Lake Wide View of OLDMP Project Phases

  6. Construction Information • Daily Construction Activity - 1,846 Reports • Weekly Construction Status & Coordination Meeting Minutes - 69 Reports • Daily Construction Photos - 9,570 photos • Geotechnical Reports - 306 Locations • Site Characterization Report - 853 Locations

  7. Source and Quantity of Construction Information NSS Zones 1 and 2 - 69 reports; 2,444 photos SSS Phase I – 897 reports; 967 photos SSS Phase II – 267 reports; 1,369 photos Phase III – 514 reports; 3,568 photos Phase IV – 168 reports; 1,222 photos

  8. Construction Activity Intensity • 13 defined construction activity categories were ranked from a low of 1 to a high of 10 based on the intensity of playa disturbances • Main criteria used in the ranking were: • Size of the area disturbed • Number of equipment and personnel involved • Frequency, number of passes, and haulage distances involved

  9. Typical Categories & Ranking • Tillage & land preparation - 10 • Pipe line installation – 6 • Utility installation & reconnaissance activities– 2

  10. Drain Line Installation - 7

  11. Haulage trucks pile sand along drain lines to be installed

  12. Trencher installs drain line

  13. Excavator loads sand through trencher chute to envelope drain

  14. Excavator backfills drains with native soil

  15. Access Road & Berm Construction - 8

  16. Ground preparation and liner placement

  17. Haulage trucks stockpile soil, gravels and stones for road construction

  18. Grading, scrapping and compacting in road construction

  19. Typical road construction scenario

  20. Construction Activity Representation Mapped locations, ranking, and timing of all construction activities were compiled into an animation

  21. Data Capture Model – Activity Detail

  22. Data Capture Model – Sub Activity

  23. Meteorological, Sand Motion and Air Quality Data • Sand flux • Teom concentration • Wind speed • Wind direction • Temperature • Relative Humidity • Precipitation

  24. Summary Construction information was combined with meteorological, sand motion, dust, and other environmental data from the lakebed to generate GIS analyses and animation Construction activities on the lakebed impact sand flux

  27. Major Construction Activities NSS Zones 1 and 2 - SF, ZML & Conveyance Pipe (Nov 2000 to Nov 2001) SSS Phase I – MV, SF & ZML (Nov 2001 to Jun 2002) SSS Phase II – SF (Sep 2002 to Apr 2003) Phase III – ZML (Sep 2003 to Sep 2004) Phase IV – SF (Nov 2004 to July 2004) Reconnaissance Activities – (Jan 2000 to Jul 2005)

  28. Typical Construction Activity – Drain Line Installation (7) • Dump trucks stock pile drain envelope materials (sand) along drain lines • Trencher (HYDRAMAXX 2600) excavates and installs drain while loader (Excavator- VOLVO 140) deposits sand through the chute of the trencher to backfill drain with envelope material • Excavator (CARTERPILLAR–D6) pushes native soil to complete drain backfill and ground preparation

  29. Source and Quantity of Construction Information

  30. Construction Impact Visualization Tool • Lakebed was divided into 10-acre grid cells • Grid cells intersected with the day’s construction activity polygons • Polygon with the highest Activity Intensity ranking within the grid cell for that day was earmarked as representing the most significant construction activity for the grid cell on that day

  31. Mapping of Construction Activities • Type 1: Buffers of a given width around construction of roads and berms; installation of pipes and utilities. • Type 2: Polygons covering the irrigation block or other areas where multiple activities are taking place at the same day. • Type 3: Circles of a given radius around point activities like pump station, turnout facility and silt trap installation.

  32. Construction Activities Category and Ranking

  33. Meteorological, Sand Motion and Air Quality Data

  34. Typical Construction Activity – Access Road/Berm Construction (8) • Ground preparation - scrapping, excavating and leveling • Geo-textile lining where needed • Haulage trucks stockpile sand, stones and dirt • Excavators, graders, and scrappers level road in specified lifts of sand gravels and stones • Compactors compact each layer that is placed on the road

  35. Summary • Construction activities between Jan 2000 and July 2005 on the Owens Lake were investigated • Daily construction activities were captured in the form of polygons on a GIS map at various locations • Polygons were ranked in terms of the intensity of disturbance associated with the construction activity • Information was combined with meteorological, sand motion, dust, and other environmental data from the lakebed to generate GIS analyses and movies showing meteorological and aerometric conditions in relation to construction activities on the lakebed

  36. Polygon Representation 10-acre grid cells Construction activity with activity intensity ranking 7 Construction activity with activity intensity ranking 8
