Factorising a single bracket. In other words, doing the opposite of expanding the bracket: from the answer, working back to the question. When would you have done something like it?. 300 + 500 = 100(3 + 5) 23000 – 7000 = 1000(23 – 7) 150000 – 123000 = 1000(150 – 123).

  3. Factorising with algebra is just the opposite of expanding a bracket • 2a + 2b = 2(a + b) • 3m – 6n = 3(m – 2n) • 15p – 12pq 3p(5 – 4q)
