  1. Lasing in -Conjugated Systems Z. V. Vardeny, M. E. Raikh and M. DeLong DMR 0202790; The University of Utah Laser action in -conjugated organic systems has been studied both experimentally and theoretically. It has been demonstrated that coherent superfluorescence is the underlying laser action in distyryl-benzene (DSB) single crystals. Lasing based on cavity feedback has been also demonstrated in DSB crystals with unintentionally formed cavities. Excitation laser pulse SF emission Laser action emission in DSB crystal (shown in inset) at  = 450 nm, which shows coherent oscillation due to superfluorescence.

  2. Lasing in -Conjugated Systems Z. V. Vardeny, M. E. Raikh and M. DeLong DMR 0202790; The University of Utah Education: This work has involved three graduate students (C. X. Sheng, M. Tong and A. Tulek), an undergraduate student (B. Burns), and a postdoc (R. Polson). We have also collaborated with two visiting professors from the Technion: Drs. B. Shapiro and E. Ehrenfreund. We also have an effort in SAM growth of -conjugated molecules, directed by a postdoc, Dr V. Burtman and a grad student, A. Ndobe. A new graduate course on the optical properties of -conjugated systems has been developed and taught for a class of about 12 students. Outreach: The electronic and optical characteristics of -conjugated semiconductors have been discussed in various G- and UG classes; as well as HS students that visited the department, for demonstrating the unique properties of molecular electronics and organic semiconductors . The PI, Z. V. Vardeny demonstrates the unique properties of DSB crystals to students at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City.
