  2. Executive Summary Background • The Texas Education Code Chapter 39.053 requires the publication of an annual report on the District’s educational performance. San Antonio ISD’s Academic Excellence Indicator System Report will be highlighted in this presentation. • District and State Demographics • SAISD has a much larger percentage of Economically Disadvantaged students (93%) compared to the State (55%) or other large urban districts including Houston (83%), Dallas is (82%), Ysleta is (80%), El Paso is (70%). Other urban districts Economically Disadvantaged student populations range from 37% to 61%. • For the purposes of this report, SAISD will be compared to urban districts with large Economically Disadvantaged student populations.   4. Executive Summary District TAAS, TAKS and SDAA Participation Rate • In 2005, our testing percentage was the same as the State. In prior years, the percentage of SAISD students testing has been slightly lower than the State. TAKS Performance • When comparing performance measured at Panel Recommendation for all grades, SAISD matched or exceeded performance growth at the state level. AEIS Report Summary 2004 - 2005

Executive Summary TAKS Performance (continued) • In both growth and actual accountability scores, SAISD shows a leadership trend among urban districts in many areas. • SAISD’s two-year growth in reading (+7 percentage points) and writing (+6 percentage points) is the largest subject area gain among similar urban districts. • SAISD matched growth in math with Corpus, Austin and Northside at +5 percentage points, and was only outscored by Ysleta with +6 percentage points.     •  SAISD matched growth in science with Ysleta at +8 percentage points, and was only outscored by Austin with +9 percentage points.     • SAISD gained +4 percentage points in social studies with only Austin and Ysleta outscoring SAISD at +5 percentage points. Executive Summary TAKS Performance (continued) • With the exception of Ysleta ISD, SAISD’s scores are typically within 3 percentage points of those of urban districts with similar Economically Disadvantaged student populations.   • In both growth and actual scores SAISD shows a leadership trend among urban districts.   7. Executive Summary Attendance Rate • Over the last five years SAISD has consistently held an attendance rate of just under 95%. Completion Rate • SAISD is closing the gap between district and state on completion rate. At 93.6%, we are only 2.5 percentage points below the state average. Recommended or Distinguished Graduation Program Participation • Since 77% of graduates earned a Recommended or Distinguished Diploma, SAISD received a Gold Performance Acknowledgement at the District level. College Entrance Exam Performance/Advanced Academic Indicators • Mean SAT scores increased by 12 points, while the mean ACT score remained the same. • There was little change in Advanced Academic Indicators over prior years.   10. District and State Demographics: Economically Disadvantaged • The percentage of economically disadvantaged students for our District is significantly higher than the state average. AEIS Report Summary 2004 - 2005

District and State TAAS and TAKS/SDAA Participation Rates • In 2001, the testing participation measurement changed to include both the Texas Assessment of Academic Skills (TAKS) and the State Developed Alternative Assessment (SDAA). Participation rates included grades 3-8 and 10 until 2003 when grades 3-11 were included. • Current year participation is the same as the state rate. AEIS Report Summary 2004 - 2005

  18. District Attendance Rates • SAISD’s attendance rate increased to just under 95% in 1999 where it has remained for 5 years. AEIS Report Summary 2004 - 2005

  19. District and State Completion Rates • SAISD is closing the gap on the completion rate indicator compared to the State. (State accountability measures graduated, received GED, or continued in high school.) • The difference between SAISD’s completion rate as compared to the State decreased from 3.3 points in 2002 to 2.5 points in 2004. • The completion rate includes graduates, GED recipients, and students continuing in high school. District and State Graduation/Student Status Rates • SAISD’s “on-time” graduation rate has increased from 70% in 1999 to 79% in 2004. • The measure reflects the percentage of students who graduate “on time” determined by their original 9th Grade class, including students who transfer into the District. State Completion Rate for Class of 2004 By Group • The Completion Rate varies by group. • African-American students show the highest percentage of “on-time” completers (82.7%). • Students in special education are not completing as “on time” graduates at a rate comparable to others.   22. District Recommended or Distinguished High School Program Participation • The number of SAISD students graduating under either the Distinguished Achievement Program or the Recommended High School Program increased from 26% in 2000 to 77% in 2004. 77 77 AEIS Report Summary 2004 - 2005

  23. District and State Student College Entrance Exam Performance • On average, SAISD students consistently score below state levels on both the SAT and ACT college entrance exams, but we made gains on the gap in SAT. • Research suggests that socioeconomic status does influence scores.   24. District Advanced Academic Indicators • 18% of students in grades 9 – 12 took at least one advanced course. • 24% of 11th and 12th AP students took one or more Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) exams while the state average for testing was only 16% of students. • 15% of those students tested met or exceeded criteria.
