  7. Nigeria: 1004 cases (compared with 590 cases for the same period in 2005: last case 14 Oct) India:  548 cases (compared with 52 cases for the same period in 2005: last case 25 Oct.) Afghanistan:  29 cases (compared to 5 cases for the same period in 2005: last case 29 Sept) Pakistan:  33 cases (compared with 22 cases for the same period in 2005: last case 2 Nov)

  8. Somalia:  32 cases (compared with 60 cases for the same period in 2005: last case 5 Sept) Namibia:  19 cases (compared with 0 cases for the same period in 2005: last case 26 June) Ethiopia:  16 cases (compared with 18 cases for the same period in 2005: last case 18 Oct)

Bangladesh:  15 cases (compared with 0 cases for the same period in 2005: last case 22 Aug) Republic of Niger:  11 cases (compared with 6 cases for the same period in 2005: last case 23 Aug) Democratic the Congo:  8 cases (compared with 0 cases for the same period in 2005: Last case 13 Aug) Indonesia:  2 cases (compared with 295 cases for the same period in 2005: last case 20 Feb)

  13. New Approaches for Polio Campaigns(Examples from India & Pakistan) • 8-9 house-house campaigns/year. • 'Underserved strategy' including systematic engagement of local leaders. • Transit strategy reaching add'l 5 million children. • Birth dose of oral polio vaccine. • IPV

  14. New Standards for Outbreak Response FAST: start within 4 weeks. VERY LARGE: 2-5 million children. HIGH QUALITY: house-to-house. SUSTAINED: minimum 3 OPTIMAL VACCINE: mOPV. Adopted by World Health Assembly, May 2006

  15. SUMMARY • 2 new polio vaccines developed, licensed & used. • 2 countries removed from list of endemic areas. • 15 countries removed from list of re-infected areas. • Saudi Arabia Action ….. only 4 countries remain endemic.

  16. PolioPlus By the time the world is certified Polio-free, Rotary contributions to polio eradication will reach nearly US $650 million.

  22. PolioPlus Partners Purpose: • Support fellow Rotarians’ polio eradication efforts in polio-endemic and high-risk countries Example: • Needs for National Immunization Days

  23. PolioPlus Partners • Social Mobilization: Raise awareness of polio immunization such as: • radio and television ads • billboards • megaphones • t-shirts/aprons to identify volunteers.

  25. Support PolioPlus Partners • Two Ways to Support PolioPlus Partners • District Designated Funds (DDF): donate available DDF to support projects on the Open Projects list. • Cash contributions: cash contributions are matched US$ .50 for each US$ 1.00 donated.
