  7. Reporting verbs We use reporting verbs in dialogues when we report what the characters said in a story. Reporting verbs can be put before or after the subject, e.g. Rapunzel said, ‘Your teeth are black.’ ‘Your teeth are black,’ said Rapunzel.

  8. Reporting verbs We can use different reporting verbs in different situations. When the character is asking a question: Rapunzel asked, ‘How often do you brush your teeth?’

  9. Reporting verbs We can use different reporting verbs in different situations. When the character is answering a question: The prince replied, ‘Once a week.’

  10. Reporting verbs We can use different reporting verbs in different situations. When the character is telling someone an idea: Rapunzel suggested, ‘You ought to brush your teeth twice a day.’
