Investigating Forces: The Effect of Applied Force on a Quarter on an Index Card

In this mini lab experiment, we explore what occurs when a force is applied to an index card with a quarter resting on it. Using a penny, index card, and cup, we will examine how the motion of the penny (dependent variable) changes in response to the applied force (independent variable) on the index card while keeping the cup, penny, and index card constant. Participants will develop a hypothesis based on their understanding of physics principles, predicting the outcome of the experiment.

  1. Mini Lab Quarter on a cup

  2. Purpose: What will happen to a quarter sitting on an index card if a force is applied to the index card only? • Equipment: • 1 penny • 1 index card • 1 cup

  3. Create a hypothesis of what you think will happen in this mini lab using the variables below • Variables: • Independent: Force on index card • Dependent: Motion of the penny • Constant/Control: The cup, the penny, the index card Hypothesis
