  2. Who is this for ? Every time you travel in a vehicle you are probably at greater risk of serious injury than at any other time of your life ! As a driver, your life, the lives of your passengers and the lives of other road users is in YOUR HANDS ! This is for : YOU YOUR Friends & YOUR Family

  3. Driving at Work Your journey to work and any travelling you do while you are at work is controlled. This is done by following the rules of your Company and the rules of the Company who have hired you to do work for them. PDO rules are laid out in the following document: Road Transport Safety Specifications (SP2000) Your CompanyMUSTcomply with these rules.

  4. Driving at Work The Rules cover 3 main areas: • The DRIVER • The JOURNEY • The VEHICLE The following 3 slides cover thebasic requirementsfor these areas, for detail you need to look or ask about: Road Transport Safety Specifications (SP2000)

Driving at Work The DRIVER shall: • ensure ALL wear seatbelt • hold a valid ROP Driving License & PDO Driving Permit • not be under influence of alcohol / drugs • not use a GSM (NOT even hands-off GSM) • follow the dust code • be rested (max driving hours) • not use his private vehicle to travel to the interior

  6. NEW 01/05/2002 Use of Private Vehicles The use of Private vehicles to: Travel to the interior and / or travel whilst in the interior is STRICTLY PROHIBITED

  7. Driving at Work The JOURNEY : • must have Safe Journey Management (SJM) in place for trips over 20 km • Safe Journey Management has three main responsible persons: • The Authorising Person • The Journey Manager • The Driver

Driving at Work • The Authorising Person MUST • ensure the Journey management point is clearly identified and has the required facilities, ensure that the Journey manager is trained and competent………..and more ! • WHO IS YOUR AUTHORING PERSON - Does he do this ? • The Journey Manager MUST • have received the correct training, verify the journey is necessary, check the vehicle is suitable, check the RAS certification, check the drivers license and PDO permit, check the plan does not violate the drivers hours, initiate emergency response ……….and more ! • WHO IS YOUR JOURNEY MANAGER - Does he do this ? • The Driver MUST • not leave without a fully authorised and understood SJM plan, contact the JM as specified in the SJM plan and/or when changes are made to the journey, complete a vehicle check………and more ! • ARE YOU A DRIVER - Do you do this ?

  9. Driving at Work The Vehicle must: • be certified to Road Assurance Standard (RAS) and have a sticker displayed ! (renewed annually) Do ALL your vehicles have current RAS stickers ? • be properly equipment • Seatbelts for all seats, Luggage space separated from passengers, First Aid kit, Fire extinguisher , Air Conditioning etc……. Do your vehicles have the proper equipment ? • be checked DAILY (by driver) & after a specified mileage or time period (by a trained vehicle mechanic) Do YOU or your drivers do DAILY checks ? Are the vehicles that YOU use checked regularly ?

  10. Driving at Work Why are these rules there ? They are there for one reason only - To prevent damage to PEOPLE, Environment, Equipment and Reputation. (Note: prevent Damage to PEOPLE is top of the list) Aren’t there too many rules ? Each and every rule is there for a good reason - Most road safety rules are there to prevent accidents, that have already happened, from happening again ! But why are we still having accidents ? This is mainly because people either do not know the rules OR they do not follow them.

  12. Camels are a Hazard ! Nov 2001 Sperry Sun Hit Camel at night Oct 2001 Schlumberger Swerved to avoid Camel All drivers and passengers were wearing seatbelts and received only minor injuries ! May 2002 Weatherford Swerved to avoid Camel

January 2002 Cameron (Muscat) Workshop crew bus involved in an accident in wet conditions 5 persons were injured -there wereNO SEATBELTSfor the passengers, the driver had a seatbelt and was not injured ! • Does YOUR crew bus have seatbelts ? • Do YOU wear them ? • Does YOUR driver check you are wearing them ?

  14. April 2002 MBPS(Fahud) Man attempted to cross a “pool of water”, despite the fact a Schlumburger truck was already stuck ! • Would you drive across a Wadi ? • If you were a passenger would you let the driver cross ?

  15. July 2000 DAMAC Catering Five men were returning to Muscat to take medicals, the vehicle had not been checked, it was planned as a day trip journey of +/-11hrs driving , the driver was inexperienced the pick-up left the road and rolled, this resulted in 1 Fatality + 3 serious injuries ! Would you have authorised this journey ?

  16. March 2001 Al Turki/Truck Oman An Al Turki pick-up tried to get across a junction before a truck passed. Was he in a hurry ? Did he not see the truck ? The driver and the left side passenger died, the two others in the pick-up were seriously injured ! If you were a driver or a passengers in the pick-up OR the truck how could you have prevented this ?

  17. PASSENGERS • A PASSENGER should: • ALWAYS wear a seatbelt • NEVER distract the driver • look out for HAZARDS the driver may • have missed • let the driver know if he is not DRIVING • SAFELY Remember the mistakes, risk taking or oversights of the driver will affect YOU !

  18. June 2001 UES/3rd Party A private pick-up travelling at high speedin a dust cloud ran into the back of a UES trailer The driver said “ when he saw the trailer he was travelling too fast to stop” !

  19. The Dust Code If you can’t see that the road ahead is clear, PULL OVER ! Do YOU follow the Dust Code, does your DRIVER ?

  20. March 2001 Midwesco(Nizwa) Two men traveled home in a private vehicle to celebrate Eid, on their return journey they had a tyre blow-out at high speed Maqboul Abdulrasool Al-Zadjali and Faisal Qasim Al-Balushi died, neither were wearing a seat belt !

  21. Nov 2001 Schlumberger(Nimr) Crew travelling to Nimr, the passenger and the driverfell asleepand drove into the back of a water tanker • The driver had 5 hrs sleep the night before • The passenger was injured (LTI)

  22. Nov 2001 Bureau Veritas(Natih) Two men traveling home to Muscat, the driver was not PDO licensed, he fell asleep or lost concentration and left the road, he over-corrected and the vehicle rolled (end to end) • Hari Gupta died, Khalid Al Haijury was injured (LTI).

  23. April 2001 AL Mutahidha/3rd Party Nissan Patrol driver fell asleep or lost concentration and hit an oncoming Truck - the Driver died instantly. Have you ever driven while feeling sleepy ?

  24. The ROP Rules Royal decree No.91/2001 (Sept 2001) Reckless drivers face 5-years in jail

The ROP Rules If YOU do this: (a) Driving in a rash manner with-out due care and diligence (b) Driving in inebriated condition under the influence of drugs or alcohol (c)Driving in a manner that constitutes danger or that puts the lives of persons or property at risk And it leads to this: (a) Death of a person (b) Bodily injuries to third parties that make them unable to attend to their work for a period exceeding 10 days YOU could face 5-years in jail

  27. Summary • Know & Follow the Rules AT WORK: • WEAR Seat-belts • DO NOT Drive at Night • SLOW DOWN - check your Speed limiter works • DO YOUR Safe Journey Management • CHECK your vehicle - RAS & Daily inspections • FOLLOW the Dust Code • DO NOT use your Private vehicle in the interior

  28. CHILDREN IN CARS Why use YOUR seatbelt and not strap in YOUR CHILDREN ? They are the most precious gifts you will ever be given - look after them !

  29. Summary • Know & Follow the Rules AT HOME: • WEAR Seat-belts • Stick to the SPEED LIMITS • Drive Defensively NOT Aggressively • Get your car serviced REGULARILY • Look after your Children - STRAP THEM IN • Don’t get frustrated by others • Don’t drive if you are tired

ARE YOU SUFFERING ? • DO YOU : • flash other drivers when they won’t move out of the way ? • drive close to the car in front to get them to move over ? • close the gap in front of you if someone tries to“cut in” ? If you do, you are suffering from ROAD RAGE - this will lead to frustration, which will lead to an accident - Stop now, while you still can !

  31. Summary • Remember YOUR responsibilities: • The actions YOU take MUST Guarantee • your OWN safety • your PASSENGERS safety • the safety of OTHER ROAD USERS.
