We are conducting research into the ‘intermediate outcomes’ from arts programmes for offenders • These are things like various forms of psychological or emotional change, or improved in-prison behaviour which might indicate someone was on a journey towards desistancefrom crime. • NOMS has asked us to • Identify possible intermediate outcomes • Investigate whether these could be usefully put into toolkits for use by providers to capture the effects of their work

To answer these research questions we are asking providers • What do providers think are the effects or results of their programmes? • Can (and should) these effects be captured or measured? • What are the main barriers and facilitators to measurement? • Is there an appetite among providers to measure outcomes – to show commissioners or funders? First step in the research is to conduct interviews with arts organisations to discuss these questions

In this workshop we’d like to invite yourthoughts on… • What kinds of change are arts interventions (of different kinds) hoping to bring about in individuals? • By what mechanisms are these changes brought about? Is there a clear ‘theory of change’? • What are the barriers to measuring intermediate outcomes from arts programmes? What do you currently measure, and why?
