  3. Human Activities • Human activities have impacted ecosystems. • Hunting and gathering • Agriculture • Industrialization • Urban development

  4. Natural Resources • Natural resources are in danger of being depleted and/or polluted. • Renewable • Water, wind, solar • Nonrenewable • Fossil fuels – coal, oil, natural gas

  5. Tragedy of “The Commons” • Any resource, if free and accessible to everyone, is in danger of being depleted and eventually destroyed. • Over-hunting • Over-fishing • Over-grazing • Over-farming • Deforestation

  6. Sustainable Development • Development that uses natural resources without harming or depleting them. • Forest management • Aquaculture • Renewable resources • Green building • Catskill Center for Conservation and Development

  7. Biodiversity • Biodiversity is an important source of foods, industrial products and especially medicines. • The tropical rainforest has the greatest biodiversity on earth.

  8. Biodiversity • The greater the biodiversity the more stable the ecosystem. • Human activities have reduced biodiversity, causing some species to become endangered or extinct.

  9. Threats to Biodiversity • Loss of habitat • Wildlife products (poaching) • Pollution • Biological magnification • Invasive species
