  1. Lesson Plan using the ASSURE Model Janna Parker

  2. Analyze Learners • Young Adults between the ages of 14 and 18 in the grades Ninth to Twelfth. Young adults are able to read, comprehend, and dissect given material. They are also able to formulate conclusions and predictions as well as postulate theories and give different viewpoints.

  3. State Objectives • Get Students to comprehend the different various methods of historical thought as well as show the nature of cause and effects in history.- “Students will be able to identify the Correlation between Nat Turner’s Slave Rebellion and the increase in Abuse toward Slaves in the South during the early 1800’s. Students will participate in an in class discussion about slave rebellion and their causes and effects on Southern life in the 1800’s “

  4. Select Methods, Media and Materials • Through visual learning as well as discussion. Using video tape, textbooks and various articles- “The Article “The Confessions of Nat Turner”; Historical Document – The Richmond Enquirer News article on August 30, 1831; Film excerpts from “Nat Turner: A Troublesome Property”; The Slave Trade pg 28-34”

  5. Utilize Materials • Students will watch the video which will help them better understand the characters of history that we are discussing. Students will also read over certain passages in the text and articles to receive another form of visual stimulation as well.

  6. Utilize Materials • Students will view excerpts from the film to receive a information on the slave revolt. There will be a brief discussion on the film in where everyone will give their interpretation on the film. • Students will then read the chapters in the book that refer to Nat Turner from the text, “The Slave Trade” and complete the question at the end of the chapter.

  7. Require Learner Participation • Students will read the article from the Enquirer and “The Confessions of Nat Turner” and then compare and contrast the two opposing views on Nat Turner’s slave revolt in and open forum. The class will spilt up into two teams, each team fighting for the particular view point of either Nat Turner or the Enquirer. Then the teams will switch viewpoints and start over again. • Students will then plan a slave revolt using the weapons and area of that time to see why Nat Turner failed and what improvements could be made on his plan, if any.

  8. Evaluate and Revise • Students will show what they’ve learned by writing a one to two page paper citing the facts. Information gained from today’s lesson will be used. • Student will exhibit what they learned through the discussion and by completing a worksheet. • Questions will be asked and answered by students with help by the teacher
