  3. Breakdown the question What is it asking you? What are the “things” you are looking for in the question?

  4. Creating a fill-in-the-blank thesis The response(s) of settled societies to the expansion of the Mongols in the 13th and 14th century was/were ______________ and the consequence(s) of that expansion was/were _______________________.

  5. Analyze the documents and figure out how they answer the question.- Understanding - STAM S – Speaker of the document T – Tone of the speaker/document A – Audience of the document M – Message/Summary of the document

  6. Substantiation. How does the document answer the question? What does the document tell you about the question? In this case, what does it say about people’s response to the Mongols? What does it say about the consequences of the Mongol Expansion?

  7. Creating groups • Based on how the documents answer the question, use the answers they provide to group the documents • Response of respect – 1, 2, 4, 5, 7 • Response of disgust – 1, 3, 6 • Consequence of death/destruction – 1, 3, 6 • Consequence of increased trade – 2, 7

  9. Filling in the thesis The responses of settled societies to the expansion of the Mongols in the 13th and 14th century were respect (4, 5) and disgust (1, 3, 6) and the consequence of that expansion was increased trade (2, 7).

Additional Document Different methods Opposite point of view of a speaker. – If you have someone with a particular bias, ask for a document that may provide a different perspective on that bias. Missing social class – traditional – women and peasants/poor Actual history – If you know the history, what is left out by the documents
