  3. Proteins • A nutrient is needed for growth, and to build and repair body tissues is a protein. Proteins are also needed to regulate body processes and to supply energy.

  4. Carbohydrates A nutrient that is the main source of energy for the body is a carbohydrate. Carbohydrates include sugars, starches, and fiber.

  5. Fats • Saturated Fat- a type of fat found in dairy products, solid vegetable fat, and meat and poultry. • Are in solid forms when in room temperature. • Saturated fats contribute to the level of cholesterol in a persons blood. • Cholesterol- is a fat like substance made by the body and found in certain foods. • Fat- is a nutrient that provides energy and helps the body store and use vitamins. Most Fats can be found in Sugary Foods.

Vitamins • Fat-soluble vitamins- a dissolves in fat and can be stored in the body • There are four fat-soluble vitamins: A, D, E, And K • Water-soluble vitamins- a vitamin that dissolves in water and cannot be stored by the body in significant amounts. • Vitamins C and B are perfect examples. • Vitamin B Complex- have 6 types which are called Vitamin B 1,2,3,6,9 and 12

  7. Water • Water makes up the basic parts of your blood, helps waste removal, regulates your body temperature and cushions the spinal cored and joints.

  8. Food Labels • The listing of the amount of food that is considered a serving is called the serving size. • The listing of the number of serving in the container or package is called the servings per package. • The calorie listing is the listing of the number of calories in one serving of the food.

  9. Decoding Food Labels Most foods have a listing of ingredients. It tells what parts make up the food. Ingredients – pieces that make up a particular food. Examples would be milk, eggs, strawberries, squash, noodles, etc. Ingredients are whats in the food.

  19. The Food Groups • The food guide pyramid is a guide that tells how many servings from each food group are recommended for each day.

  20. Dietary Guidelines • What to know about dietary guidelines are is, The USDA’s dietary guidelines are designed to promote good health. When u follow the guidelines, you obtain the nutrients your body needs and reduce the risk of developing certain diseases.

Vegetarian Diets • A diet in which vegetables are the foundation and meat, fish, and poultry are restricted or eliminated is a Vegetarian diet. • The diet in which they exclude foods of animal origin is a vegan diet. • A diet that excludes eggs, fish, poultry, and red meat is a ova-lacto-vegetarian diet. • The diet that excludes red meat is a semi-vegetarian diet. • As a vegetarian, one should eat soy beans since they are the only vegetable that contains protein found in meat and fish.

  31. Diet and Cancer • Diets with high usage of antioxidants have been associated with decreased rates of esophagus, lung, colon, and stomach cancer. An Antioxidant is a substance that protects cells from being damaged by oxidation.

  32. Tips to reduce chances of getting cancer • Avoid obesity. • Eat several servings of fruit and vegetables each day. • Limit fat intake. (Smoked, Salted, or Nitrate-cured). • Don’t drink alcohol as a teen.
