Origin of Lying • Webster’s Definition: “To make an untrue statement with intent to deceive • Garden of Eden: Serpent deceived Adam and Eve • John 8:44 “You are of your father the Devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning and has not stood in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he tells a lie, he speaks from his own nature, because he is a liar and the father of lies.” • Satan = lying

  3. Lying is… • Saying what is not true • Satan deceives Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden • Not saying the full truth • Genesis 20: Abraham lies about who his wife is Sarah

  4. Scriptures on Lying • Proverbs 12:19 Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue, only a moment. • 12:22 Lying lips are detestable to the LORD, but faithful people are His delight. • 13:5 The righteous hate lying, but the wicked act disgustingly and disgracefully. • 14:5 An honest witness does not deceive, but a dishonest witness utters lies. • 19:5 A false witness will not go unpunished, and one who utters lies will not escape. • 21:6 Making a fortune through a lying tongue is a vanishing mist, a pursuit of death.

(Pulling a gun on your neighbor) • 26:28 A lying tongue hates those it crushes, and a flattering mouth causes ruin. • Lev. 19:11 You must not steal. You must not act deceptively or lie to one another. • Col 3:9 Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his practices… • Eph. 4:25 Since you put away lying, speak the truth, each on to his neighbor, because we are members of one another.

Scriptures on Lying • 1 John 1:6 If we say, “We have fellowship with Him,” and we walk in darkness, we are lying and are not practicing the truth. • Living a lie • Rev. 21:8 But the cowards, unbelievers, vile, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars – their share will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.

  7. Types of Lies (Mark Driscoll at Mars Hill) • Flattery • Psalm 12:2 They lie to one another; they speak with flattering lips and deceptive hearts. (Say what they want to hear for manipulation) • Deception • I John 3:7 Little children, let no one deceive you! The one who does what is right is righteous, just as He is righteous. (False information, twisting the truth for harm) • Slander • Lev. 19:16 You must not go about spreading slander among your people; you must not jeopardize your neighbor’s life; I am the LORD. (Cutting down; trash talk)

  8. Types of Lies • False Teaching • 2 Peter 2:1 But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Mast who brought them, and will bring swift destruction on themselves. • Gossip • I Tim. 5:13 At the same time, they also learn to be idle, going from house to house; they are not only idle, but are also gossips and busybodies, saying things they shouldn’t say.
