National Recommendations for Physical Activity Weekly activity should add up to at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity in bouts of 10 minutes or more A stronger recognition of the role of vigorous activity – 75 minutes of vigorous intensity activity also gives protective health benefits The flexibility to combine moderate and vigorous intensity activity An emphasis upon daily activity New guidelines on sedentary behaviour

Why is it important? • Workplace Health as a key setting (‘Moving More, Living More’, HM Govt, Feb 2014) • Physical Activity is part of London Workplace Charter • Health benefits • Better staff concentration, increased productivity • Stronger team working • Reduced sickness absence • Attract & maintain best staff

  7. Health benefits of being active daily  • Reduces risk of a range of diseases, eg CHD, stroke, type 2 diabetes  • Helps maintain healthy weight  • Helps maintain ability to carry out everyday tasks  • Improves self-esteem  • Helps reduces anxiety and depression 

  8. Policy • Employers of all sizes should be involved, in larger orgs: Senior Managers and HR staff.  • Should be supported by management & link into other policies eg OH policies, active travel, flexible working. 

  9. Involving staff • Action should include measures to maximise the opportunity for all employees to participate.  • Any P activity programme should be based on consultation with staff ensuring they are involved in planning, design & monitoring.

A framework that supports businesses self-assess health and well-being activities and procedures It provides: • Clear guidance on how to make workplaces more productive and supportive • An accreditation process that demonstrates the commitment of employers • Opportunity to learn from other businesses taking part in the scheme • Current Gwich businesses accredited are:Alcatel, National Maritime Museum, Greenwich Council, Novotel, The Metro, Greenwich University, SLHT

  13. Why should you take part? (1) Sickness absence and worklessness related to ill-health costs the British economy £100 billion a year. The Charter can result in: • Increased productivity & staff retention • Long-term reduction in sickness absence rates

  14. Why should you take part? (2) • Recognition through brand development & PR • Positions businesses as employers of choice. • Contributes positively to reputation, for example can be useful in recruitment process

  15. How to get involved in the Charter? • There are 3 accreditation days per year, select a date & aim for 1 of these. Bringing evidence together can take 6 months. • Expertise from ourselves on developing your evidence. • Accreditation process is developmental one, learning from other organisations is also helpful.

What should a P activity programme look like? (1) Minimising Sedentary Behaviour: • Where possible move around more at work, eg work to external meetings, walking meetings, stand up desks • Signage at strategic points to encourage stair use.  Encourage short walks during long breaks.  • Taking regular breaks at work  Signposting/Information • Information provided on how to increase Physical activity, highlighting health benefits, other motivators   • Signpost to local services that promote or deliver physical activity e.g. Greenwich Get Active, Greenwich Leisure Limited

What should a P activity programme look like? (2) Walking and Cycling – Active Travel: • Encouraging walking or cycling as part of journey to or from work, or as part of working day.  • Provide information on walking & cycling routes  • Developing a Travel plan • Where possible set goals on progress made and distances covered.  Other Considerations • Take into account night shift workers who would have less opportunity to fit P Activity in. • Offer confidential, independent health check w focus on increasing activity.  • Incentivisation, fun egFitbug • Flexible working should be encouraged.
