  2. Democracy around the world Here, we will compare and see how some of the other world countries handle their elections. Whether they are major players in the world or small states, each country manages the electoral process differently.

  3. Voter Turnout in the US • The US is one of the lowest voting democracies, with a voter registration of 67.5% and a 51.3% actual turnout.

  4. Spain • This past election in Spain was a monumental one. The socialist party won the election after defeating the conservative Popular Party. • Three days after the terrorist attacks in Madrid, Luis Rodriguez Zapatero won the election for Prime Minister (head of government) promising that his government would commit to fighting terror. • The voter turnout in this past election was in upwards of 76% • The chief of state is King Juan Carlos I

  6. Mexico • In the year 2000, this country became the highest voting democracy in the world, when Vicente Fox defeated the PRI’s 72 year power regime. • There was over 78% of voter turnout in the Presidential election of 2000

  9. Government in India • India is somewhat similar to the US in their government system. Here, an electoral college consisting of members elected to participate in the Parliament and the legislatures; but there is also a prime Minister that is selected by voters of the majority party in the Parliament. • Elected president has a five year term

  10. Multi-Partisan System • Bharatiya Janata Party or BJP • Indian National Congress or INC • Samajwadi Party or SP • Communist Party of India or CPI • Rashtriya Janata Dal or RJD • Bahujan Samaj Party or BSP • Nationalist Congress Party or NCP

  11. Government in Lebanon. • In Lebanon, traditionally speaking, the president of the country has to be a Maronite Christian, the vice president a Sunni Muslim and the speaker of the house a Shi’a Muslim. • Elections are held every six years.
