The Anchors of the American Century • Two fundamentally American ideas anchored globalization since WW II. • CAPITALISM US-STYLE • Low taxes, light regulation and small government power growth. • Deregulation/Privatization became the order of the day in the US, the West, and the world. • Build free markets here, there, and everywhere • LET FREEDOM RING • USA champions liberal democracy here, there, and everywhere • The US led the march of freedom worldwide • MISSION • Set standards that build and sustain a prosperous, peaceful international order.

The Tools of the American Century • Soft Power • ability to attract and co-opt, rather than coerce with force or money, as a means of persuasion • Culture, ideals, images, outlooks, rhetoric • People worldwide found the American form of self-government attractive and reset their societies along the same lines. • Now, if you resisted our standards…. • Hard Power • Use of military, financial, and/or economic coercion to influence the behavior interests of other political agents • Nation as Peacekeeper
