  2. John Keats • John Keats was born on 31 October 1795 and died 23 February 1821. • He was the last born of the English Romantic poets and, at 25, the youngest to die. • Keat’s letters to Fanny Brawne are among the most famous love letters ever written.

Fanny Brawne • Fanny Brawne was first Keat’s neighbor and later his fiancée. • They fell in love, though Keat’s friends were against the match. • As next door neighbor’s, they exchanged numerous short notes, and occasionally more passionate ones. None of Fanny’s letters to Keat’s survive. From his, however, it seems he was often unsettled by her behavior and uncertain of her affection. His illness brought them closer; when he left for Rome, they were engaged and deeply in love.

The Poem • I cry your mercy -pity -love! -aye, love! • Merciful love that tantalizes not, • One-thoughted, never-wandering, guileless love, • Unmasked, and being seen -without a blot! • O! let me have thee whole, -all -all -be mine! • That shape, that fairness, that sweet minor zest • Of love, your kiss, -those hands, those eyes divine, • That warm, white, lucent, million-pleasured breast, - • Yourself -your soul -in pity give me all, • Withhold no atom's atom or I die, • Or living on, perhaps, your wretched thrall, • Forget, in the mist of idle misery, • Life's purposes, -the palate of my mind • Losing its gust, and my ambition blind!

  5. The poem • The poem was inspired by Fanny Brawne. It is about John Keats’ love for her and how he always wants to be with her and if he cannot be then he thinks he could die because life would not be worth living without her.
