Self talk – Positive: Martyn Lloyd-Jones We must learn to take ourselves in hand. … we must talk to ourselves instead of allowing ‘ourselves’ to talk to us! the main trouble is that we allow our self to talk to instead of talking to our self….. most of your unhappiness in life is due to the fact that you are listening to yourself instead of talking to yourself? Take those thoughts that come to you the moment you wake up in the morning. You have not originated them but they start talking to you, they bring back the problems of yesterday. Someone is talking. Who is talking to you? Your self is talking to you.

  10. Self talk: Positive You have to take yourself in hand; you have to address yourself, preach to yourself, question yourself. This self of ours this other man, within us, has got to be handled. Do not listen to him, turn on him; speak to him; condemn him; upbraid him; exhort him; encourage him; remind him of what you know instead of listening placidly to him and allowing him to drag you down and depress you. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God? My tears have been my foodday and night, while people say to me all day long, “Where is your God?” These things I remember as I pour out my soul: how I used to go to the house of God. Why my soul are you so downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Psalm 42:1-4

Self Talk: CHECKLIST OF COGNITIVE DISTORTIONS • Am I Jumping to conclusions: (A) Mind reading- assuming that people are reacting negatively to you when there's no definite evidence for this ‘She must be thinking that I am a useless person.’ (B) Fortune-telling-arbitrarily predicting that things will turn out badly. ’The meeting is definitely going to go terribly.’

  33. Self Talk: A WORKING EXAMPLE My problem: I feel anxious about seeing Tom for my annual review. He seemed a bit annoyed when my report was late. I feel that he will be highly critical of me. I’m such a loser. I fear that I am going to be demoted or lose my job. Then how will we cope? This makes me very nervous – I feel agitated, my tummy is dancing, I’m not sleeping well.

I do my job ok and both Tom and more importantly God know that! What is the worst that is likely to happen? After all, God has promised to take care of me and nothing is outside his control What is a more constructive, biblically driven way of looking at it?
