  1. Spiritual Disciplines

  2. Exercising Spiritual Disciplines Dallas Willard asserts a believers’ attempt to mimic Jesus’ life is similar to young baseball players who watch their favorite pros play flawlessly, yet when he/she tries to do the same on the field, he/she seems to always fall short.

  3. Exercising Spiritual Disciplines What’s the difference? The young person lacks the hours of practice and discipline which are a part of the athlete’s life both on and off the field. An athlete’s entire lifestyle is focused to prepare him/her for that split second when the “spot light” is on.

  4. Exercising Spiritual Disciplines He suggests that a critical element in living like Jesus is to regularly practice Biblical spiritual disciplines. Just as an athlete practices physical disciplines, so too believers must practice spiritual disciplines!

  5. Exercising Spiritual Disciplines What do you think of Willard’s baseball analogy?

  6. Exercising Spiritual Disciplines Disciplines of Abstinence: Chastity Fasting Frugality/Simplicity Poverty Sacrifice Silence Solitude

  7. Exercising Spiritual Disciplines Disciplines of Engagement: Prayer Meditation Scripture Memory Service Stewardship (time, talents & Treasures) Study Watching (where is God at work & join Him) Worship

  8. Exercising Spiritual Disciplines Of the spiritual disciplines, which has most assisted you in becoming more Christ-like?

  9. Exercising Spiritual Disciplines If you had to guess, which spiritual discipline would best assist you in growing more Christ-like at this point in your journey?

  10. Key Principle:The Cost of Change

  11. What are some of the implications of growing into the image and likeness of Jesus Christ (Rom 8:29ff) and people’s overall resistance to change in one’s life?

  12. Principle:The Cost of Remaining the Same (Dissatisfaction) must be greater than the Cost of the Change plus the First Steps of Change or Change will not occur!!!

  13. Cost of the Change(s) Plus 1st Steps of the Change Cost of Remaining the Same(Dissatisfaction)

  14. Illustration:Doctor: “Mr. Smith, you must loose 40 pounds or you’ll have a heart attack w/in 12 months.”Mr. Smith: “I’ll start tomorrow, ‘NOT’”

  15. Illustration:18 Months Later- Mr. Smith is in the ER with a mild heart attack Doctor: “Now, loose the 40 lbs or this time next year I’ll be your widow’s doctor!”Mr. Smith: “So my choices are stay the same and die or loose weight and live?”

  16. Illustration:Statistically- In this situation, the average man changes his diet and begins exercising. He looses the weight and is doing good. The Cost of Remaining the Same Outweighed the Cost of Change!!!

  17. Illustration:The story is not over!!!Statistically- Within two years, 85% of men revert back to former patterns of behavior and typically suffer a major heart attach. Change is Hard!!
