This starter activity from David Bailey encourages students to explore electricity concepts by visualizing a series circuit. Using a working circuit with a cell, bulb, and switch, students are prompted to imagine themselves small enough to observe the inner workings of the circuit. They will draw what they visualize, fostering creativity and understanding. The activity culminates in a discussion of common scientific models used to explain electricity, highlighting the narrative aspect of scientific explanation, which the students will further explore during the main activity.

Modelling electricity - Starter By David Bailey Based on an idea by Bob Kibble - Moray House School of Education, Edinburgh 1. Preparation 2. Starter activity
1. Preparation You will need… A working series circuit containing a cell, bulb, switch and connecting wires. The power point slide to match this starter (but don’t show this yet!) Make sure that all students have a something to draw on and something to draw with.
2. Starter activity Instructions Ask students to look at a circuit. Ask them to imagine that they are so small that they can see what is happening in the wires. Ask them to draw what they see. Give them a few minutes to do this. Discuss the four common models as shown on the PowerPoint slide. Explain that scientists use models to explain what they see and that this involves telling a story. During the main activity that matches this starter they are going to learn the story that scientists tell to explain electricity.
