  1. There are many different ways of coming to decisions within a group….. • VOTING • COMPROMISE • CONSENSUS

  2. This is what we’re trying to avoid!

  3. VOTING • The easiest and quickest method but which can lead to the easiest solution, rather than the best & most sustainable • Win or lose – rarely room for compromise or amendment • Minority may resist or undermine the decision • Impersonal as voting does not take account of an individual’s feelings, needs or desires • Will of majority can be seen as the will of the group

  4. COMPROMISE • 2 or more sides state their position and move towards each other, making concessions as they go • Can lead to dissatisfaction for everyone, with nobody getting what they want

  5. CONSENSUS What is it? • A creative and inclusive way of making a decision • A process where everyone works to reach a decision which all can accept • The product of everyone’s best thinking • A better and more sustainable way of making decisions, if minority voices are listened to

  6. CONSENSUS What does it need? • The commitment of every member of the group to make it work • An open mind and the preparedness to listen to, and be aware of, others • Strong and impartial chairing & facilitation • An understanding and acceptance of agreed ground rules • Time

  7. CONSENSUS Why should we consider it? • Its about finding common ground and solutions which are acceptable to everyone • Every person has the power to make changes, and to prevent changes they find unacceptable • Each individual has the right to veto a decision and that right must be respected and upheld by everyone • Minorities cannot be ignored and all work together to find creative solutions to their concerns • Everyone agrees with the final decision and therefore all are more committed to it • It gives power (and responsibility) to all

  8. The final result of consensus!!
