  4. Facts • Germaniums family number is 14. • Germanium’s valence number is 4. • At room temperature, it is a solid. • It is a crystalline, gray-white metalloid.

  5. History • Germanium was discovered by a German chemist named Clemens Winkler in 1886. Today, germanium is collected from the smelting of zinc ores and from the byproducts of burning certain types of coal. Germanium is mostly used in the semiconductor industry. When doped with small amounts of arsenic, gallium, indium, antimony or phosphorus, it is used to make transistors for the use in electronic devices. Germanium is also used to create mixtures and as a phosphor in fluorescent lamps. Both germanium and germanium oxide are clear to glowing radiation and are used in glowing visual instruments and glowing detectors.

  6. Its Impact • Germanium has been used for improving body system function and for boosting the immune system. Germanium has also been used for a variety of problems including low energy, eye problems like cataracts, AIDS, cancer, heart disease and arthritis. Some germanium compounds seem to be effective in killing some types of bacteria and are currently being studied for use in chemotherapy.
