  2. What is a Just Right Book? • It’s not about what’s popular- it’s about what is a good fit for you. • A book you enjoy reading. • Fits your interest level & reading level. • Choosing a book is like shopping • Window shop • Pick up & survey • Try it on!

  3. Types of Books • Fiction • Graphic Novels& Comics • Non-fiction • Audio Books • E-books

  4. Think about- Genre • What types of stories & movies do you like? • Do you love animals? • Do you like to learn about history? • Are you interested in time travel or Space? • Do you like adventure/Survival stories? • Do you like stories about kids like you? • Do you like mysteries or scary books? • Do you like books with fantasy characters? • Do you like books about vampires? • Do you like teenage romance stories? • Do you like dystopian Fiction? • Do you like classics?

  5. Think about- your interests • What are your hobbies? • What do you like to do in your spare time? • Who are your heroes? • What jobs interest you? • Do you collect anything? • What does your family like to do? • Read a book that connects to your interests!

  6. Think about- Reading Level • Do you know your reading level? • Read an entire page out loud- if you make more than 3 mistakes the text is too hard. • Did you know you can search by book level using our card catalog? • Find a list of books in your reading level from the link on my web site

Think about- Length • Do you often get bored with long books? • Do you get overwhelmed by thick books? • Do you find yourself always looking for thin books? • Great stories come in all different lengths. • Just because a book is long- it doesn’t mean the book is hard! • Just find a book you like!

  9. Does reading feel like a chore? • If it does- you are reading the wrong books! • Try a different Genre. • Listen to the audio while you read. • Try an e-book • Try a graphic novel or non-fiction book • Read a magazine or newspaper • All reading is valuable!

  10. Baseball Book Challenge • Step up to the plate & Challenge Mrs. Johns to find a book you will like. • She gets 3 tries to pitch you a good book • Hopefully at least one will be a hit! • You agree to read the 3 books she chooses & get prizes along the way!

  12. Your Assignment… • Use the things we talked about today to shop for a good book. • Walk around the library • Pick up books & survey them • Try on a great book! • When the chimes ring we will gather in the tables at the other side of the library
