  3. CLIMATE In Portugal, the mediterranean characteristics of the climate turns water supply for irrigation an important issue in agricultural activity. Plants vegetative grow and maturation usually happens in summer time, when high levels of temperature and solar radiation occur, together with almost null rainfall.

  4. HYDRIC RESOURCES www.arbvs.pt This water storage fulfils, practically with no restrictions, the needs of an irrigation season that in average consumes 40% of the three dams total useful capacity.

  5. MAIN ACTIVITIES > Water supply and delivery: - Agriculture and industry. • > Infrastructures maintenance and repair: • - Irrigation System (9 pumping stations, 211 Km of canals, 172 Km of irrigation ditches, hydrants,…); • - Rural roads. > Management and exploitation of Hydro-electrical Power Stations - Maranhão Dam; - Montargil Dam; - Gameiro smallDam. • >Soil and water conservation: • - Drainage system (4 drainage pumping stations, 1 mix station, ditches,…); • -Flood control structures; • - Water quality monitoring (phosphates and salts) inside canals, rivers and dams; • - Soil and water leaching control (ph, conductivity, nitrites and nitrates). • > Rural Development
