The President of the United States is elected using the Electoral College system • Each state is assigned a number of “electors,” the people who will vote for the President • Number of electors = number of senators + number of representatives • During the Presidential election, the citizens of each state vote for a presidential candidate, but their votes actually decide that states elector will be • Electors are tacitly tied to a specific candidate • In about half the states, electors are not required to vote for the candidate that they are tied to • Most states are winner-takes-all (if a candidate gets 51% of the vote they get 100% of the electors) • There are a total of 537 electors, a candidate must get at least 270 votes to become president

The worst terrorist attack in US history occurred on September 11th, 2001 • Terrorists hijacked four planes, crashing two into the World Trade Center towers in New York City and one into the Pentagon • Passengers on the fourth plane fought the hijackers and it crashed in Pennsylvania • Approximately 3,000 men, women, and children were killed in the attacks • The attacks were carried about by al-Qaeda, a terrorist group headed by Osama bin Laden • Al-Qaeda was angry at US support for Israel and Arab countries that they felt oppressed Muslims • Al-Qaeda was based in Afghanistan, where they were sheltered by the extremist, fundamentalist Taliban government • In response to the 9/11 attacks, the US tightened airport security, increased anti-terrorist programs in the US, and launched the War on Terror abroad
