  2. What is Close Up? • Close Up brings civic lessons to life by taking students behind the scenes and allowing them to witness their government in action. • Students' days are packed from morning to night with activities including study visits to Washington landmarks, seminars with national leaders, and small-group workshops. • Students spend an evening at the theater, attend a formal banquet and dance, and are given a day of scheduled independent time for exploring the city.

  3. A Typical Day • Each morning we gathered in small group workshops with 20 other students from across the country. • In these workshops we discussed the fundamentals of democracy, important political figures, and current events, to name a few.

  4. Continued… • After workshop, we went to hear speakers, visited monuments and government buildings, went to the Smithsonians, and took trips to surrounding DC neighborhoods.

  5. Continued… • We ended up the day with large group activities, such as workshops on Affirmative Action and Terri Schiavo and debates between liberals and conservatives. • One night we went to Ford’s Theater to see “Big River”.

  6. Capitol Hill Day • On our Capitol Hill Day, we were able to meet Tim Johnson, John Thune, and Stephanie Herseth. • We also got a tour of the Capitol.

  7. Our Personal Favorites • Kelsey’s favorite site was the Congressional Library. • Molly really enjoyed the Georgetown neighborhood study. • Most of all, we both loved being able to talk about critical issues with our peers.

  8. Trip Preparation • Know current events • Check the weather • Find sites to visit on the free day • Bring good walking shoes • Set goals on a personal and educational level

  9. Conclusion • We had the time of our lives in Washington, DC. Not only did we see some beautiful sites, but we also learned a lot about the democratic process and our role in the government. • Thank you so much for giving us all of these fantastic experiences! We extremely appreciate it, and we’ll remember this trip forever.
