  2. Improving the Working Conditions • Towards the middle of the 1800’s, Parliament started to pass laws to protect workers. • Minimum wage and maximum work hours were regulated. • Safety inspectors were sent by the government to enforce the new laws.

  3. The Growth of Labor Unions • Labor unions were outlawed while trade unions were made legal but going on strike wasn’t. • Unions spread across Britain and won rights causing membership to increase. • Workers had higher wages and shorter work hours. • To improve the lives of the working class, unions pressed for other laws.

  4. Later Reforms • In the 1800’s, Britain enacted reforms for the working class. • Disraeli improved the health and housing for workers. • Gladstone gave out jobs to people on merit rather than birth or wealth. Disraeli Gladstone

  5. Later Reforms Continued • The Fabian Society was an organization founded in 1883 • The Fabians were small but held strong influence and promoted gradual change through legal means rather than violence. • The Labor Party was created in 1900 by the socialists and union members.

  6. Later Reforms Continued • Britain Passed social welfare laws to protect the poor and disadvantaged. • Workers were protected with accident health and unemployment insurance. • Marxism gained limited support among the working class as a result.
