  2. I. Post-WWII outcomes 1) United Nations- formed near end of WWII as a body of nations to prevent future global wars. What organization had been formed at the end of WWI to prevent global war?

  3. 2) Europe: -Lay in ruins -Soviets controlled East Europe -Germany divided into East (Communist) and West (Democratic) EAST WEST Divided Berlin

  6. II. Cold War THE STAKES ARE HIGH (BOTH U.S. and Soviet Union hold capability to destroy each other) 1949 Soviet Union successfully explodes an atomic bomb 1952 1st Hydrogen Bomb tested *Much more powerful than the Atomic Bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki *Precision Missile Launch

  7. Cold War Alliances NATO- North Atlantic Treaty Organization - Defensive alliance between U.S. and Western Europe: 1sttime U.S. entered into peacetime military alliance Warsaw Pact (1950) - Defensive alliance between Soviet Union and Eastern European Countries.

  8. Canada and the Cold War • Canada was caught in the shadow of the USA-USSR conflict • Canada believed that the USA was being over aggressive in their dealings with the Soviets • This caused concern for Canada who was put in a dangerous situation

  9. In 1949 the Soviet Union tested its first atomic bomb and in reply Canada's military spending soared. • Canada struggled to keep its own foreign policies but still keep the protection of the USA

Events of the Cold War • Gouzenko Spy Case  proved that spies and espionage was real (like in movies) – USSR was spying on Canada! • NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) is formed: Canada, USA, Britain, and the nations of Western Europe • to be used for protection outside the UN to avoid USSR veto power

  11. Military Systems • NORAD – North American Air Defense Command (Aerospace Defense) • Integrated the air-defense forces of the two countries. • Located beneath a Mountain in Colorado -- USA are the commanders and Canada deputy commanders

The DEW line (Distant Early Warning) • A system to detect attacks situated in the N.W.T. • Jointly created with the USA for a cost of $405 million ($150mil CND share) • Radar used to detect enemy aircraft and missles from 4800km away • By the early 1960s all of the radar lines had become obsolete

Korean War • The Korean War: After WWII Korea was divided into 2 states: North Korea (communist) under USSR South Korea (democratic) under USA • On June 25th, 1950 North Korea invaded South Korea • The UN voted to protect SK & the USSR could not veto due to its boycott of the UN at the time because (Red) China had not been given a seat. • An armistice was signed in 1953 – Canada had 21 940 troops serve & 312 were killed

  14. Avro Arrow • Avro Arrow – Canada began building the worlds most advanced ‘supersonic’ jet fighter • Cost was much higher than anticipated – rose from $2 mil. Per plane to $12mil. • USA were not interested in buying the plane and the gov’t cancelled its program • 14000 employees were fired and all the planes and design papers were destroyed.
