What Are Linguistic Supports? • Linguistic supports: • Allow for meaning participation in an assessment • Seek to reduce the language barrier to assess knowledge of content rather than English language proficiency • Enable students to demonstrate knowledge of content without altering the test construct

  3. Embedded Linguistic Supports • Provided digitally as components of the test administration system • Examples: • Text-to-speech • Spanish online form

  4. Non-embedded Linguistic Supports • Provided locally not within the platform of the test administration system • Examples: • Native language supports • Clarification of directions • Paper-and-pencil test

  5. Reasons to Order Paper-and-Pencil Test Forms • District intends to provide written translations in languages other than Spanish. • Student would benefit from side-by-side forms (English and another language). • Student needs Spanish audio files (provided by NDE). • Student arrives shortly before testing and has had significantly limited access to technology.

  6. Making Decisions about Linguistic Supports • Made on an individual basis • Team input • Based on student characteristics • Based on levels of English proficiency

Former English Learners • Who are former English learners? • Redesignated English fluent • Have been exited from the English learner program • Which supports are appropriate? • Translated directions/assessments and paper/pencil forms are not allowed • All other allowable linguistic supports, if appropriate
