Bell work & Notes Types of societies 2/26/14 • How might the social structure (I.E the groups, roles, statuses etc…) differ between someone who lives in a large city and someone who lives as a hunter gatherer in the frozen Alaskan tundra?
Preindustrial Societies • These are societies whose primary economic activity is food production • Hunter-Gatherer Societies • Pastoral Societies – members rely on domesticated herds of animals • Horticultural Societies – members rely on fruits and vegetables grown in garden plots clear from the jungle • Agricultural Societies – use animal labor to plow fields & irrigation to water them • Sharp status differences start to appear between land owner and peasant
Industrial Societies • Shift from the production of food to the production of manufactured goods • Production of material culture shifts from the home to the factory • Urbanization- people relocate from farms to cities • In preindustrial societies most statuses are ascribed but in industrial society most statuses are achieved
Post-Industrial Societies • Shift from the production of goods to the provision of information • HUGE increase in socioeconomic status for most people • Strong emphasis on social equality, democracy and individualism
