  1. Actions for the Future • Establishing and maintaining good mental and emotional health is a lifelong, never-ending process.

  2. Maslow Mr.Galle is awesome • There are 3 major theorists regarding personality formation. • Sigmund Freud • Erik Erikson • Abraham Maslow • Maslow is who we will be reading about today. • Take out “Maslow and Emotional and Mental Health”

  3. Explain • When needs at the bottom of the Maslow pyramid are fulfilled, humans seek to and are able to fulfill higher-order needs. • Most people have their physiological needs fulfilled most of the time. • Teenagers, adults and senior citizens continue to attempt to satisfy their needs for safety, love, esteem and self-actualization.

  4. Create • You are going to be working in groups to create a list of actions people take throughout their lives to fulfill their hierarchy or needs and achieve good mental and emotional health. • Each group is going to create a list in ONE specific area of Maslow’s hierarchy. • You will begin by only doing the TEENAGER section of the worksheet.

  5. Group Roles • Task Master:Makes sure everyone stays on task. • Writer: Writes down the group member responses. • Leader: Makes sure everyone in the group participates. • Reporter: Reports the group answers to the class.

  6. Create • Go back to your groups and work on the “Young-Adults” section of your worksheet.

  10. Create • Go back to your groups and work on the “Older Adults” section of your worksheet.

  11. Summarize • As people move through different stages in their lives, the actions they take to achieve and maintain good mental health may change. • Once the more basic needs are met, higher-order needs become the focus of their lives.

  12. Complete and Share • Take out “What About My Future?” • Complete this worksheet and we will share with the class.

  13. Summarize • Higher-order needs can only be pursued when lower-order needs are met. • Thinking and dreaming about your future and making plans are important first steps in achieving and maintaining good mental and emotional health.

  14. HOMEWORK!!!! • Interview a person whom you believe engages in activities that result in self-actualization. • Describe the concept of self-actualization; ask if the person feels he or she engages in self-actualization activities • Have the person identify specific activities he or she considers self-actualizing • And describe his or her feelings about those actions.

  15. HOMEWORK!!!! (Cont.) • Take notes on the interview • Write about what you learned from the interview in your journals. • DUE TOMORROW!!!
