  1. Recycling More than bottles and cans PASBO 2011

  2. The “old” paradigm

  3. The “New Reality” • People no longer just ask about it: They expect it! • Reduce, Reuse, Recycle • Triple bottom line • -People, Planet, Profits

  4. Act 101 – July 1988 • Mandated in communities of greater than 10,000 (minimum - at least 3 of office paper, cardboard, glass, aluminum cans, leaf waste) • #1 and #2 plastic bottles only (no market for others) • no laboratory glassware of sheet glass windows

  5. Outline • State College Area School District • Great Valley School District • Other Considerations (materials to be recycled) • Obstacles and Costs • Resources

  6. Getting started How do you eat an Elephant? . . . One bite at a time.

  7. SCASD • 2002 Pennsylvania State “Waste Watcher” Award • Waste oil • Composting • Surplus equipment

  8. SCASD • Electronic Waste • Construction • Scrap metal • BioDiesel

  9. Waste Oil

  10. Composting

  11. SurplusEquipment

  12. Universal waste • Universal wastes (batteries, lamps, ballasts) may be accumulated for 1 year • ballasts and lamps (even "green" lamps are encouraged)

  13. Electronic Waste TVs Computers Monitors Printers Fax machines Copiers DVD players Cell phones Projectors Scanners Cameras Yada, yada, yada . . . .

  14. Scrap metal Opportunities Dangers

  15. 87% Construction Waste

  16. Construction-salvage

  17. Bio-Diesel • The State College Biodiesel Project started with the integration of Chemistry and Ag Mechanics. • Students have been processing used french fry oil from the North and South High School cafeterias for the past four years. • Physical Plant utilizes the biodiesel as heating fuel. We produce about 400-500 gallons of biodiesel each year.

  18. Bio-Diesel • Physical Plant pays for the processed fuel at the midpoint of production and sale costs. • The district used to pay about $500.00/year to have waste oil taken away. A by product of the processing is glycerine - a sugar or carbohydrate. At first we used this to make soaps but we now are continuing the energy cycle by adding it to Whitetail Deer feed at the PSU Whitetail Deer Research facility.

  19. 1000th gallon of biodiesel (over 100 million btu's) has just been produced for use in our schools. • 1. A gallon of biodiesel produces 118,000 btu's/gallon - thus we have supplied 118,000,000 btu's to our schools. • 2. Our conversion of oil to fuel is 91% so we have recycled 1100 gallons of oil instead of paying to have it taken away. Bio-Diesel

  20. Bio-Diesel • 3. The averaged cost (supplies only) of producing a gallon of biodiesel is $0.83 while the district cost of heating fuel has been about $2.80 a gallon. • 4. We have had almost 100 students participating in this project over the past three years. • 5. Countless opportunities have been offered our students via the State College Biodiesel Project.

  24. Obstacles

  25. Custodial indifference • Custodial apathy? • Are they motivate to clean urinals? • Who thinks it is important? Do you?
