What the class thinks: • Determination – to overcome any obstacle, you have to want to overcome it • Communication skills – essential to go “far” – you need to work with others to gain knowledge and experience • Positive outlook on life • Creative – think outside of the box; enabling you to find your own way; innovative (risk taker) • Headstrong – you are your own biggest critic • Hardworking, smart • Confident • Respectable (in relation to character); have integrity • Don’t be afraid to fail • Ambition, logical

What the class thinks: • Ambition – commitment, buy-in; drive • determination • Confidence • Outgoing- risk taker • Passion/love for what you do • Open-mind • Don’t procrastinate – need action • Overachieve – exceed expectations, don’t be complacent • Good support system • Put yourself above other-drive, rise above • Selfish – balance between give and take • Willingness to main good physical presentation/character • Balance of respectful vs. respectable • Honor/”shady” • Unique – stand out from others • Risk-taker, fearless • Natural talent/gift or hardworking • Communicate/network

OBAA Before Reading Discussion: • The stories or advice of parents or grandparents have value and importance. • Getting ahead is more important than remaining true to oneself. • I would be willing to do anything to ensure my own survival even go against my own values and morals. • People that do not talk, act, or look like the majority of the population are not worth my time and probably have nothing to offer the world.

OBAA Before Reading Discussion: • A person can do anything he/she puts his/her mind to regardless of how great the challenge. • Refugees and immigrants do not deserve the same rights and benefits as US citizens. • I often donate my time, help, or money to those in need but expect nothing in return.

  7. Of Beetles and Angels – MawiAsgedom • Nonfiction • Written as a “memoir” – a narrative composed from personal experience (either a biography or autobiography) “It [my book] is not just my story. It is really the story of my father and my brother. Regardless of how dire things seem, it’s important to have hope.” Mawi (3 yrs old) and his brother, baby sister, and Mom before they immigrated to the US in 1983

OBAA Background • Mawi and his family are forced to flee Ethiopia during the civil war with Eritrea (lasted from 1961 to 1991 • Sponsored by World Relief and is relocated to Wheaton, IL in 1983 where he lived in a motel on Roosevelt Road. • His story: • Showcases what it means to be a true survivor against all odds • Solidifies the importance of embracing your differences and cultural background • Memorializes the gifts we receive from others
