  3. One child policy in China • In 1979 China’s government adopted a one child policy. Families are fined if they have more than one child • The main opposition of this is that children help families tend to farms, and if they only have one child there is not enough help available.

  4. Religion • The main religions in China are: • Taoism • Buddhism • Confucianism

  6. Mongolia and Taiwan

  7. Mongolian Empire • Mongols were nomadic herders for thousands of years • Genghis Khan conquered all of Central Asia and moved towards China creating the Mongolian Empire. • China ruled Mongolia from the 1300’s-1911 • From 1924-1989 Mongolia was communist

  8. Culture of Mongolia • Influenced heavily by China • The most important festival in Mongolia is the Naadam festival of the 3 games of men. It includes wrestling, archery, and horse racing

  9. Culture of Taiwan • Taiwan's population is almost exclusively Chinese • The capital city of Taipei includes Buddhist temples and Chinese art museums. • The island has many universities and the population is well educated • 90% of the people practice Buddhism, Taoism, or Confucianism

  10. Economy of Mongolia • A large part of Mongolia still engages in herding and livestock. • Mongolia is trying to develop more manufacturing and construction industries. They have large deposits of coal, gold, petroleum, copper, and iron

  11. Economic Tiger • Taiwan is considered one of the economic tigers of Asia. • An economic tiger is a nation that has rapid economic growth due to cheap labor, high technology, and aggressive exports

  12. Daily life in Mongolia • The climate of Mongolia is extreme. Long cold winters last 6 months and can kill much of their livestock. • Nomads live in tents called yurts. These can be found everywhere in Mongolia.

  13. Daily life in Taiwan • Taiwan has many western influences. • Baseball is extremely popular in Taiwan and Japan. This is an example of cultural diffusion
