  2. 1819 Alabama becomes a state.

  3. 1860 Alabama secedes(leaves) the United States(the Union) along with other Southern states to form the Confederate States of America

  4. Montgomery, Alabama 1st capital of the Confederate States of America during the Civil War.

  5. Winston County, Alabama They did not want to participate in the war with the rest of the state in fighting for the South in the Civil War. The county declared itself neutral in the war and many residents fully supported the North!

  6. Battle of Mobile Bay Important battle of the Civil War where Northern admiral David Farragut captures the port city of Mobile from the South and cut off a major supply route for the South

  7. The Black Belt • Major farming region in southern Alabama with fertile soil.

  8. The Black Belt • Cotton was the major crop here until the Boil Weevil, an insect, destroyed the cotton crop in 1915.

  9. Alabama Constitution • Created by the Democrats to keep blacks from voting . It required them to pass a literacy test(reading and writing) as well as own land in order to be able to vote. • This kept blacks from voting which kept the Democrats in power in the state.

  10. Tuskegee Institute • School created for blacks by former slave Booker T. Washington in Alabama. The school became a very important technical school.

  11. George Washington Carver Student at Tuskegee Institute who experimented with peanuts, cotton, and soybeans. His work produced new ways to use these crops and allowed southern farmers to grow crops other than cotton.

  12. W.C. Handy • Black jazz musician born in Florence, Alabama who became extremely popular in the 1920’s. • The father of the blues.

  13. Zelda Fitzgerald • Writer and wife to famous writer F. Scott Fitzgerald (The Great Gatsby). • Zelda was from Alabama and wrote a few famous pieces such as “The Southern Girl” and “A Couple of Nuts”.

  14. Tuskegee Airmen Group of famous, all black pilots from Tuskegee, Alabama who participated and fought in World War II.
